Birthday Girls Just Wanna Have Fun: A Side-By-Side Of Meryl Streep & Cyndi Lauper

Two bona fide divas are sharing a birthday this weekend: Meryl Streep turns 64, while Cyndi Lauper celebrates the big 6-0. Both have given us vital entertainment we can hardly imagine living without (Kramer vs. Kramer!, “Time After Time”! Postcards From The Edge! Kinky Boots!)

To celebrate these fabulous ladies, we’ve drawn up a side-by-side comparison with a focus on their greatest accomplishments and attributes.

AWARDS

Meryl: Three Oscars (and 17 nominations), more than any other actress, plus two Emmys, two SAG Awards, and eight Golden Globes. She’s been nominated for Grammys and a Tony, but never won.

Cyndi: She’s got the Emmy, Grammy, and Tony of the EGOT covered, thanks to her recent win for Kinky Boots.

FASHION

Meryl: Dowdy chic. Sometimes... just dowdy.

Cyndi: Let’s just say she likes to let her true colors shine through. A lot.

BEST MOVIE ROLE

Meryl: Choosing Meryl Streep’s single greatest performance? Why, that would be like Sophie’s Choice!

Cyndi: The 1993 Michael J. Fox vehicle Life With Mikey (by default). For TV, though, we loved her wisecracking on Mad About You

BEST SOUNDTRACK CONTRIBUTION

Meryl: You might think we’d go for something from Mamma Mia, but “Me” from Death Becomes Her is the most divine ode to self-infatuation ever composed.

Cyndi: “The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough” was (obviously) written especially for The Goonies, but in terms of re-purposing past singles, you can’t beat Romy and Michele (and Alan Cumming!) dancing to “Time After Time.”

GAY CONNECTION

MERYL-CYNDI-GAY

Meryl: Is there another working actress out there who’s taken on so many gay-friendly roles? She played a lesbian in The Hours, camped it up in Death Becomes Her, and portrayed the ultimate fashionista bitch in The Devil Wears Prada, to name just a few. Plus she’s brought a ton of number of gay faves from the stage to the screen, from Angels in America to Mamma Mia and the upcoming August: Osage County and Into The Woods. In short? Gays adore her.

Cyndi: A longtime icon of the gay community, Cyndi has been a fixture of Gay Prides and the Gay Games and put her time and money into multiple charities, including The Trevor Project and her own True Color Fund. Plus, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”? Pretty gay.

LIVES IN THE SHADOW OF...

Meryl: Nobody, for she is Meryl Streep.

Cyndi: Madonna.
