Bisexual Boxer Nicola Adams Wins Gold In Rio

In 2012, the Olympian topped the Independent's list of most influential LGBT figures in Britain.

Nicola Adams became a double Olympic champion in Rio over the weekend, making her Britain's first boxer to defend a gold medal crown since 1924.

The 33-year-old followed up her 2012 win at the London Olympics by defeating France's Sarah Ouhramoun on Saturday with a unanimous verdict.

"The gold rush continues," she said after her win. "I can't believe it. I am now officially our most accomplished amateur boxer ever and it is such an amazing feeling."

Adams is bisexual, and is known as the first openly LGBT person to win an Olympic gold medal for boxing.

“No one’s ever really cared about me being bisexual and I only came out because I had always been out, it’s just the general public didn’t know," she said. "I’m quite fearless. I’m like, ‘Let’s just go out there and do this and see what happens.'"
