Bishops Warn Catholic Voters Not To Support Pro-Equality Candidates, Label Same-Sex Marriage "Intrinsic Evil"

"A Catholic cannot vote for a candidate who takes a position in favor of an intrinsic evil."

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is coming together this week to rewrite the Catholic Church's voters' guide, and they are using the opportunity to take a stand against LGBT people and same-sex marriage.

The bishops mention same-sex marriage ten times more than they did in the last edition of the voters' guide, and have filed it under the section that deals with "intrinsic evils."

"Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship," as the guide is called, is released by the Catholic Church to help people decide for whom they should vote during election season.

"Catholics often face difficult choices about how to vote," explains the 2007 edition. "This is why it is so important to vote according to a well-formed conscience that perceives the proper relationship among moral goods. A Catholic cannot vote for a candidate who takes a position in favor of an intrinsic evil, such as abortion or racism, if the voter’s intent is to support that position."

But Michael Sean Winters of the National Catholic Reporter is calling out the bigoted edits being made.

"At a time when racial tensions are at their worst in my adult lifetime," writes Winters, "the proposed text equates same-sex marriage with racism, calling them both intrinsic evils, even though civil same-sex marriage is not, and cannot be, an intrinsic evil."

He also called out the lack of discussion of the topic during the Pope's recent U.S. visit.

"Pope Francis did not think it necessary to mention the issue directly even once during the six days he was here in the U.S.," said Winters.

He said the bishops "should have the honesty to rename it 'Forming Consciences for Fighting Same-Sex Marriage.'"
