Bob Harper Recalls "Widow Maker" Heart Attack: "I Was On That Ground Dead"

"It's been a huge wake up call for me."

"I was in full cardiac arrest," celebrity trainer Bob Harper told Savannah Guthrie this morning on the Today show. "My heart stopped."

Harper sat down with Guthrie for an exclusive interview about his near-fatal heart attack he suffered back in February.

"Not to be dramatic, but I was dead. I was on that ground dead," said the 51-year-old fitness guru. "I had what they call a 'widow-maker.' It was a six percent survival rate, and the fact that there were doctors in the gym when I had the heart attack saved my life."

In the interview Harper revealed that he doesn't actually remember the day he had the heart attack while working out at a New York gym. "It was super scary for me because I woke up [in the hospital] and I was so confused," described Harper. "I was like Dory from Finding Nemo because I had this short-term memory, so I was reliving the heart attack over and over again."

"I was like, 'wait, why am I here? What happened to me?' And ten minutes later I was asking the same thing and getting super emotional."

Guthrie asked him how he's been emotionally since the cardiac event and Harper revealed that he has been doing cardiac rehab, but that he's been going through "some depression."

"I'm really understanding what's important in life. I'm going to celebrate every single day I'm here."

At the end of the interview Harper stressed viewers to listen to their bodies, citing that he had dizzy spells days before his heart attack, but ignored them. "There were things going on in my body that I needed to be more aware of."

The Biggest Loser trainer is very health conscious, but he realizes genetics also plays a part—his mother died from a heart attack.

After the on-air interview Today hosted a Facebook Live with Harper where he elaborated on his current exercise regimen and talked about the haters who are coming for him and his diet on social media:

We're glad Harper is on the up and up!
