Meet The Woman Turning Classic Bollywood Hunks Into Queer Works Of Art

"It reveals that nothing has been binary right from the start."

Mili Sethia is reworking photos of Bollywood actors from the '90s into rainbow-tinted works of art in an attempt to question our perceptions of masculinity.

The Mumbai-based artist created the project, which she titled "Esqueer," after noticing something interesting about the photos of the stars she was stumbling upon across the internet.

“The men [the photos] featured were considered to be the epitome of macho-ness and were all actually posing in almost vulnerable positions — almost questioning that monolithic notion of that very masculinity,” Sethia said in an interview with Buzzfeed.

The 26-year-old added that it's healthy for straight people to see things a little differently "because there’s always more to nearly any individual than the great gender binary.”

“Most importantly, for those of us who grew up queer, it reveals that nothing has been binary right from the start,” she said.

Sethia's project will be on display at The Hive in Mumbai for a week in mid-October, and you can check out more of her artwork here.
