Got Five Dollars, or Five Minutes? Here's How You Can Help Undocumented LGBTQ People

Whether you can give time or money, here are two simple ways to support those affected by the border crisis.

Five Dollars/Five Minutes is a series to help direct you to simple, inexpensive ways to act against discrimination and to protect the rights of the LGBTQ community—and all people—endangered by the Trump administration.

News of the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border is rocking Americans across the nation, with disturbing stories and heartbreaking audio clips revealing the unjust treatment of migrant children and other undocumented people by government agencies. For LGBTQ migrants, particularly trans people, the plight is especially serious, with many queer people suffering mistreatment as they seek asylum.

Here are two ways you can help America's undocumented LGBTQ community.

Got five (or more) minutes?

Pick up the phone and give your local legislator a call. Tomorrow, June 22, Congress is voting on a GOP-led "compromise" immigration bill. Now is the perfect chance to call your local legislator at 1-844-USA-0234 and ask them to oppose the Trump administration's continued attacks on immigrants and children.

Stumped on what language to use? Representatives from Immigration Equality Action Fund, the nation's leading advocacy group for the undocumented LGBTQ community, recommend demanding that the administration "stop separating and jailing families" and "oppose any legislation that increases detention, or makes it harder for asylum seekers to receive the protection they deserve."

Got $5?

Consider donating $5 (or more) directly to Immigration Equality Action Fund. Founded in 1994, the organization proudly advocates for LGBTQ and HIV-positive immigrants by protesting unjust immigration policies, lobbying with Congress for fairer laws, and offering undocumented queer people pro-bono legal services.
