Both Kim Davis And Jim Obergefell Are Attending Obama's State Of The Union Address

Obergefell was the lead plaintiff in the Supreme Court case that brought marriage equality to the United States.

Two people from polar opposite sides of the marriage equality debate will be in attendance at President Obama's final State of the Union address tonight.

Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk who spent five days in jail for refusing give marriage licenses to gay couples, is attending with her attorney, Matt Staver—thanks to some string-pulling by the anti-gay Family Research Council.

Presumably seated far from Davis will be Jim Obergefell, the lead plaintiff in the Supreme Court case that brought same-sex marriage to all 50 states.

He has been invited as a guest of the First Lady. He is one of 20 guests invited by the Obamas, and its expected the president will address marriage equality in his speech.

In 2013, Obergefell married his partner of 20 years, John Arthur, who in the final stages of ALS. The couple flew to Maryland from their native Ohio for a eight-minute ceremony on the tarmac. When Ohio refused to recognize their union, they sued—starting the chain of events that led the Supreme Court to rule the freedom to marry is a right for all.
