Put on your party hat because Netflix has released the first trailer for the upcoming remake of The Boys in the Band, with the entire cast from the 2018 Broadway run reprising their roles

Matt Bomer and Charlie Carver made their Broadway debuts in the 50th anniversary production alongside Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannells, Jim Parsons, Robin de Jesus, Brian Hutchison, Tuc Watkins, and Michael Benjamin Washington, who all return for the remake. Joe Mantello, who directed the Broadway production, is back to helm the movie, with Ryan Murphy producing.

“The significance of The Boys in the Band cannot be underestimated,” said Murphy in a statement when the Broadway run was announced. “In 1968, Mart Crowley made theatrical history by giving voice to gay men onstage, in this uncompromising, blisteringly honest and wickedly funny play.”

As NewNowNext previously reported, Crowley died on March 7 at the age of 84 from complications related to heart surgery.

The new preview for The Boys in the Band shows the men preparing for the ultimate birthday party, gathering at Michael's (Jim Parson) West Village pad, but it isn't long before the uncomfortable party games begin, and the group of men open old wounds and confront their past.

"The Broadway revival was a great foundation for the performances. If anything, I think the performances have all grown more complicated, deeper, funnier, more dangerous," Mantello said about returning to direct.

The interiors for the film remake were filmed in a studio in L.A., but the movie shot some exterior scenes in New York, where the play is set. Keep your eyes peeled in the new preview to see a quick scene set in Julius', the famous West Village gay bar, which was also featured in the original 1970 film directed by William Friedkin.

When The Boys in the Band premiered off-Broadway in 1968, audiences were stunned by its unadulterated look at pre-Stonewall gay life. By the 1980s, both the play and Friedkin’s 1970 film version were rejected by the LGBT community as perpetuating gross gay stereotypes. More recently, it’s been embraced both for its humor and for chronicling the emotional hardship of being gay in a world that has no use for homosexuals. As Michael famously says in the show, “Show me a happy homosexual, and I’ll show you a gay corpse.”

The Broadway production had a limited 15-week engagement in 2018, recouping its $3.5 million investment in 11 weeks of performances and winning the Tony for best revival of a play.

The Boys in the Band will hit Netflix on September 30. Check out the new trailer below.
