Bradley Manning Sentenced To 35 Years For Leaking Government Documents

Manning_BillboardPrivate Bradley Manning has been sentenced to 35 years in prison as a result of handing over more than 700,000 government files to WikiLeaks.

At the Fort Meade hearing this morning, military judge Col. Denise R. Lind reduced his rank and required him to forfeit all pay. Manning was also dishonorable discharged from the Armed Forces.

Lind ruled Manning was guilty last month, and could have sentenced him up to 90 years in prison for stealing government property and violating both the Espionage Act and Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, among other crimes.

Defense attorney argued Manning leaked the materials because he believed the public had a right to know about abuses in the Iraq War—and maintained Manning was suffering stress as a result of sexuality and gender-expression in a pre-Don't Ask Don't Tell military.

Last week, Manning apologized for the leak, saying the those factors "are not an excuse for my actions. I understood what I was doing and the decisions I made.”
