Theater: Brandy Kills In "Chicago," "Lion King" And "Aladdin" Casts Serenade An Airport, "Dames At Sea" Docks On Broadway

Broadway's longest-running American musical, Chicago, has been the destination for both excellent talent and celebrity gimmicks (I’m looking at you Wendy Williams).

Producers got it right, though, when they brought Brandy Norwood to the show.

The 36-year-old Grammy winner has created a wonderful buzz playing Roxie Hart, as evident in her  knockout performance, above, at Stars in the Alley.

Brandy's Broadway debut has been received so well, in fact, that her run has been extended through August 2.

In a recent HuffPo interview, Norwood admitted her dream is to star as Dorothy in The Wiz on On the Great White Way.

Producers of the NBC Live! production and Broadway revival have said they're looking for a “fresh face” for the role—should they consider her?

"God" Only Knows

The first show of the 2015-2016 Broadway season has opened to praise from above: An Act of God was a holy hit with critics when it opened Thursday night, including from The New York Times, which called star Jim Parsons “perfection!”

In this new comedy, God has arrived to set the record straight about his Word: "How about that Caitlyn Jenner?" Parsons, as the Almighty, asks the audience. "The first Kardashian woman I can tolerate — honestly!"

He adds: “Gay, straight, bisexual, transgender—thou art all equally smiteable in my eyes.”

Written by former Daily Show head writer David Javerbaum and directed by Joe Montello, An Act of God runs through August 2 at Studio 54.

What Would Judy Do?

Downstairs from Act of God, at 54 Below, the adorable Seth Sikes returns to sing Judy Garland songs on what would have been the gay icon's 93rd birthday.

Sikes—an acclaimed assistant director on shows like The Nance and Pageant—performs classics from the Garland songbook and recounts how Judy captivated him as a young boy in Paris, Texas. He'll be joined onstage by seven-piece band.

Seth Sikes Sings Judy Garland comes to 54 Below on June 10 at 9:30pm. Book your tickets now.

"Rock" Readies for Broadway

The 2003 Jack Black comedy School of Rock is coming to the stage, courtesy of the creators of Cats and Downton Abbey.

That's right, Andrew Lloyd Webber is providing the music for this Broadway adaptation, with lyrics by Glenn Slater (Sister Act) and a book by Abbey creator Julian Fellowes.

Alex Brighten, who was seen on Broadway in Wicked and Matilda, has been cast as the lead in the show, which focuses on an aging rocker who pretends to be a substitute teacher and enters a group of fourth-graders into a Battle of the Bands.

Will the high-grossing film translate to the stage? Previews begin November 2 at the Winter Garden.

Benjamin Walker “Bates” Broadway

The role of Patrick Bateman has been confirmed for the much-anticipated Broadway debut of American Psycho: Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson star Benjamin Walker takes the lead in the musical, based on the serial-killer novel by Bret Easton Ellis.

The show, which premiered in London in 2013 with Doctor Who's Matt Smith in the lead, features a book by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and a score by Spring Awakening’s Duncan Sheik.

No theater or dates have been announced, but it's expected to turn Broadway blood red in February.

While "Cats" Is Away, "Sylvia" Will Play

A.R. Gurney’s 1995 play, Sylvia, is coming to Broadway for the first time!

The absurdist comedy sees a middle-aged yuppie couple adopt a "talking" dog—played by Sarah Jessica Parker in the original Off-Broadway production.

This time, Kinky Boots' Annaleigh Ashford plays the titular canine, joined onstage by the incomparable Julie White and Robert Sella.

Performances begin September 25 at a theater to be announced.

"Dames" Docks on Broadway

Also making its Broadway debut next season is the musical that launched Bernadette Peter’s career: Dames at Sea

This throwback to movie musicals past gets a re-imagined revival full of tap dancing and laughter. The new production, directed and choreographed by Randy Skinner, will dock at the Helen Hayes this fall.

Dames might actually be the final show to play the Hayes: Second Stage Theatre recently purchased the tiny Broadway house for $24.7 million, and has plans to rename and renovate it.

Opening night for Dames at Sea is set for October 22.

Chita Rivera Wants To Die

Theater legend Chita Rivera popped up on The Tonight Show recently to promote The Visit, and revealed to Jimmy Fallon that she's dying to appear on AMC's The Walking Dead.

While we think Chita is the furthest thing from dead, but we love the idea. Who wouldn't want a zombie that gave us "Fosse! Fosse! Fosse!"

Hakuna Matata!

Usually being stuck at the airport for six hours is sheer torture. But when you've got the casts of Aladdin and The Lion King serenading you, its a dream come true.

Performers from both Broadway shows were at LaGuardia Airport with a lengthy layover, and decided to entertain exhausted travelers with an impromptu sing-off.

After the Lion King cast performed “Circle of Life,” James Monroe Iglehart (a.k.a. Genie) did a freestyle rap  and the Aladdin troupe broke into “Arabian Nights.”

Is there a Tony award for Best Performance In an Airport Terminal? 'Cause there should be.

Last summer, The Lion King performed for passengers on an NYC subway car. We've heard of touring productions, but this is ridiculous!
