Brian Boitano, Olympic Figure Skater, Comes Out As Gay Before Going To Sochi Games

"I am many things: a son, a brother, and uncle, a friend, an athlete, a cook, an author, and being gay is just one part of who I am," Boitano said in a statement. "First and foremost I am an American athlete and I am proud to live in a country that encourages diversity, openness and tolerance. As an athlete, I hope we can remain focused on the Olympic spirit which celebrates achievement in sport by peoples of all nations."

Boitano, 50, now becomes one of three openly gay members of the delegation, joining tennis legend Billie Jean King and hockey player Caitlin Cahow, a two-time Olympic medalist. The presence of three out athletes representing America at the Games is widely considered a tacit statement by the Obama Administration against Russia's persecution of its LGBT community.

Boitano has been the subject of gay rumors for decades, but has pointedly refused to discuss his sexuality before now.  "I have always reserved my private life for my family and friends," he explained, "and will continue to do so."
