“Sense8” Star Brian J. Smith Links With Cast of “The Matrix 4”

The out actor joins Jonathan Groff and Neil Patrick Harris in the sci-fi sequel.

Yet another out actor has decided to take the red pill.

Brian J. Smith is reteaming with Sense 8 co-creator Lana Wachowski on The Matrix 4, Deadline reports, joining previously announced talent like Neil Patrick Harris and Jonathan Groff.

Smith's character is still a secret, but we do know Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith are returning to reprise their roles from the original sci-fi film trilogy alongside Matrix newcomers Priyanka Chopra, Jessica Henwick, Eréndira Ibarra, Toby Onwumere, Andrew Caldwell, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

Smith came out publicly as gay last year in an interview with Attitude.

“I could never be who I was. I was constantly having to check myself and make sure I wasn’t looking at someone too long or making someone feel uncomfortable,” he said of his Texas upbringing. “I had to be very, very careful about telling people the truth about myself. It still reverberates. A lot of my work is about that. The things that move me as an actor are those echoes that come up.”

Smith's other credits include Gossip Girl, The Good Wife, and Treadstone. He notably played gay opposite Benjamin Walker in the 2009 film The War Boys, and he appeared on Broadway in Come Back, Little Sheba, The Columnist, and The Glass Menagerie.

Trans filmmaker Lana Wachowski, who helmed the Matrix trilogy with sister Lilly, is directing The Matrix 4 and co-writing the screenplay with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell.

The Matrix 4 is in theaters March 5, 2021.
