British Parliament Votes In Favour Of Gay Marriage

Will the Brits edge out the French in a race to become the 12th nation to legalize same-sex marriage?

After more than six hours of bitter debate (not including the break for tea), British MP's overwhelmingly backed Prime Minister David Cameron's controversial plan to legalize gay marriage with a vote of 400-175 in favor of the freedom to marry.

"I know there are strong views on both side of the argument—I accept that," said Cameron with a British accent, "But I think this is an important step forward for our country."

With the Prime Minister's support, equality is expected to win the forthcoming battle in the House of Lords.

Once law, the provisions of the bill—which allows for couples previously entered into a civil partnerships to convert their relationships into a marriage—take effect in 2015.
