"Brokeback" to TV? Thank Miley!

Variety is reporting that eight years after the debut of the award-winning film, The CW has commissioned a pilot TV adaptation of Brokeback Mountain from executive producer Greg Berlanti (Arrow, Everwood).

“We are absolutely thrilled to be bringing the iconic world of Brokeback Mountain to television,” said Berlanti. “It’s such a groundbreaking story that moves everyone who reads it or saw the film. We are eager to bring that same feeling to brand new, younger audiences at The CW.”

The show will be only loosely based on the original short story from E. Annie Proulx and will chronicle the lives of teen versions of lead characters Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar as they struggle to make their way at the often-intimidating elite Wyoming boarding school Brokeback Prep.

“So much of Brokeback is about these characters trying to manage new discoveries about themselves, which is just like high school,” said Berlanti, “so the two seemed an obvious fit. Our Jack and Ennis will go through the same journey of self-discovery, except instead of the backdrop of isolated sheep herding, they will be doing it amidst a lavish world of gossip, privilege, glamour, and backstabbing, where even the biggest secrets can’t stay secret for long.”

Jack is a new student at Brokeback Prep, learning to navigate the various cliques and social dramas for the first time, particularly his unexpected feelings for popular lacrosse captain Ennis. But Ennis will have his own drama to cope with in the form of troublemaking vixen "McKaylee."

Bad girl McKaylee is actually the first character cast, with none other than Miley Cyrus signed for the role. (Cyrus will also have a producing credit on the series.)

Asked if the show might draw the ire of fans for straying too much from the original story, Pedowitz dismissed the idea. “Everyone involved in the project is 110% committed to maintaining the integrity of the Brokeback story, especially Miley.”

In addition to grappling with eating disorders, overdoses, alcoholic parents, and long-lost sisters, Jack will discover that his new school holds a dark secret he never could have imagined: the nearby Brokeback Mountain is home to a community of sexy, malicious werewolves. Every month, two students are selected as sacrifices and, using only their wits and a series of 18th-century weapons, must go to Brokeback Mountain and engage in battle royale combat with the werewolves to stand any chance of survival.

“Any time you return to a story that people already know, the stakes have to be ten times higher,” Berlanti added. “The wolf duels will bring a fresh sense of urgency to Brokeback Mountain. Not everyone will make it out alive.”

The CW also announced today that, along with her acting and producing responsibilities, Cyrus has been tapped to write two original songs for the show, the upbeat theme song “How 2 Quit U” and ballad “Happy April Fools’ Day.”
