Bruce Jenner Shares His Truth As A Trans Woman In Diane Sawyer Interview

In a sit-down interview with Diane Sawyer on ABC, Bruce Jenner shared what the media and the public has been speculating on for months—that he considers himself female.

(Note: Jenner has not requested the use of female pronouns or shared a new name, so following GLAAD's lead, we will be using male pronouns in this article.)

In a highly touted ABC News special, the Olympic medalist and reality-TV star said "for all intents and purposes,  I am a woman.”

He explained that “my brain is much more female than it is male.”

Jenner, who used the third person throughout the interview, says he's been coming to grips with his identity since childhood.

“Bruce Jenner is — I would say I’ve always been confused about my gender identity since I was this big.”

Jenner has been married three times, and says all three of his spouses knew of the journey he was on.

But while he was part of one of the most popular reality shows on TV, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, he felt invisible.

"I had the story," Jenner said.

"We've done 420 episodes, I think, and the entire run I kept thinking to myself ... the one real true story in the family was the one I was hiding.  The one thing that could really make a difference in people's lives was in my soul, and I couldn't say anything."

But he hopes reality fame will enable him to reach a wider audience that might not understand what it means to have a non-traditional gender identity.

“We’re going to make a difference in the world with what we’re doing,” he said. “And if the whole Kardashian show and reality television gave me that foothold into that world—to be able to go out there and really do something good, I’m all for it. I got no problem with that.”

In talking with Sawyer, Jenner revealed that he had taken hormones for several years in the 1980s, but decided not to transition.

“You’ve got no guts,” he recalled. Jenner began to transition again more recently but became a victim of his own renewed fame.

He admits he considered suicide when news of his tracheal shave leaked.

ABC News says Kris Kardashian declined to comment on the interview, shot in February. But she tweeted tonight, "No one asked me to comment .... and I'm sitting with Bruce now watching this show so let's keep it real..."

Jenner also made it clear that he's alway been sexually attracted to women: "I've never been with a guy. There's two different things here. Sexuality is who you are personally attracted to—but gender identity is who you are in your soul."

He is the parent of six biological children, four of whom appeared in the special. Son Brandon Jenner told Sawyer, “when I see my dad as a woman, it might be a little shocking at first,” he said, but confirms, “There’s a thread throughout his life — the life he was longing to live.”

Brandon added, "I’m just honored and more proud than ever to be a part of the family.”

While several trans personalities, including Laverne Cox and Janet Mock, have become major advocates in the media, Jenner is the most widely known trans person to share their story.

"Today, millions of people learned that someone they know is transgender," said GLAAD president Kate Ellis. "By sharing this story, Bruce Jenner has shined a light on what it means to be transgender and live authentically in the face of unimaginable public scrutiny. Though Jenner's journey is one that is deeply personal, it is also one that will impact and inspire countless people around the world."

Nick Adams, GLAAD's Director of Transgender Media, said he hopes Jenner's story will encourage people to learn more about their trans friends, co-workers and family members. "Stories like these will help create a world in which everyone can express their gender identity without fear of discrimination and violence."
