Gay Village Serial Killer Gets Life Sentence for Murdering Eight Men

By the time he's eligible for parole, he'll be 92 years old.

A serial killer who tormented and brutally murdered eight gay men in Toronto, Canada, will be jailed for life with no opportunity for parole for 25 years.

Late last month, 67-year-old Bruce McArthur, a self-employed landscaper, pleaded guilty to eight counts of first-degree murder. His crimes were grisly, and the details—read aloud to judges in front of his victims' friends, family, and loved ones—were shocking.

McArthur specifically targeted gay men in Toronto using gay dating apps. After brutally killing them and staging their bodies for pictures, he disposed of most of his victims' remains in garden planters at a home he landscaped.

McArthur's confirmed victims, whom he murdered between 2010 and 2017, are Selim Esen, Andrew Kinsman, Majeed Kayhan, Dean Lisowick, Skandaraj Navaratnam, Soroush Mahmudi, Kirushna Kan withagaratnam, and Abdulbasir Faizi.

Some of his victims weren't out to their families or hid their gay sex lives from their wives. Abdulbasir Faizi's widow, Kareema Faizi, told The New York Times that she now works 18 hours or more each day to support their two daughters.

"They pretend to be strong in front of me,” she added. “But when they are alone in their room, they take a picture of their father with them. I hear them crying constantly.”

Since McArthur plead guilty and verified the details of his killings in court, his sentence—life in prison with no parole eligibility for 25 years—wasn't up for the debate. The only thing judges deliberated on was whether to grant him parole eligibility concurrent or consecutive to his sentence.

According to Global News Canada, judges decided this week that McArthur could be eligible for parole 25 years into his sentence. Judge John McMahon told reporters that he was certain McArthur's age means he would pose little to no danger to the public. In 25 years, the convicted killer will be 92 years old.
