Bryan Safi Refuses To Get Serious

"I mean, King Tweet is our president!" says the star of TV Land's "Throwing Shade."

Is Bryan Safi ready for prime time? Tonight at 10:30pm, the out comedian joins Erin Gibson for Throwing Shade, TV Land's version of their popular Funny or Die podcast skewering pop culture and politics.

Safi says given the recent political climate—and a certain inauguration coming up on Friday—it's more important to be satirical than ever.

"We've been very affected by the election," he tells NewNowNext. "Before it was like, 'Let's have some fun!' Now we want to kick the door down and hold people's feet to the fire."

The tone of the show, however, will remain the same: "Politics IS pop culture," says Safi, who's popped up on shows like Young & Hungry, Modern Family, and Superstore.

"I mean, King Tweet is our president. But, I don't know that we will talk about the Kardashians as much now."

Below, Safi talks with us about the show, the gay man/straight girl chemistry, and more.

Catch Throwing Shade Tuesday night at 10:30pm on TV Land, and again at midnight Wednesday on Logo.

How are you and Erin adapting the Throwing Shade podcast to TV?

We're taking taking the tone and everything from the podcast, but now we make it more visual. It's tricky. This is not the podcast on TV. It's more like John Oliver and Amy Schumer, with sketches.

Are you kind of sad you have to care about how you look now?

I can't even believe we don't get to wear sweatpants, and we have to turn off our phones. I am not wearing a suit and tie.

Will there be celebrity guests?

We'll have guests in the sketches, but not interviews or anything like that.

TV Land has really changed from its roots as just a classic-sitcom station. That said, what's your favorite classic sitcom?

Oh, definitely The Mary Tyler Moore Show. I'm a Rhoda.

Throwing Shade plays up the chemistry between gay men and straight women. Why is that such a potent relationship?

Part of it is, I think, that homophobia is misplaced misogyny. Homophobes hate gay men because they're feminine—and they hate women for it, too. It's the same common denominator. But I think we've finally moved past that idea of gay men as there to just prop women up. We've moved past the "hair stylist" stereotype, or the person "collecting" gays.

And for me, personally, a lot of my friends are women—Erin, my friend Stephanie. I owe a lot to the women in my life—my aunts, my mother, my grandmother.

How did you and Erin meet?

We originally met at UCB, and then we were on Infomania together on this channel called Current. We just bonded—we had the same sensibility. Always trying to find the smartest joke with the dumbest way to say it.

The show tapes and then it airs—there's not a lot of time to rework it or make changes. Are you nervous?

Ordinarily it would be terrifying. But I've starting meditating, a lot of breathwork and staying in the moment. So I can REALLY enjoy this.

We've worked for six years to make this happen. This could last through the spring and that's it, so I don't wanna to waste time worrying.
