A subway station in Buenos Aires has been renamed in honor of LGBT activist Carlos Jáuregui, the first president of the Argentine Homosexual Community and a founder of the Gay Association for Civil Rights.

Before his death in 1996, Jáuregui helped promote the campaign for civil unions and was instrumental in getting sexual orientation added to Buenos Aires' anti-discrimination laws. He was also active in fighting the HIV/AIDS crisis in Argentina.

The station was opened earlier this month by Buenos Aires mayor Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, who said he was proud to honor "a defender of the rights of minorities."

The Carlos Jáuregui station celebrates inclusion through art and information: Venezuelan artist Daniel Arzola created a large mural and other artwork depicting Jaauregui and other figures associated with LGBT rights. The stairs between platforms have also been painted using the colors of the Pride flag.

Previously known as the "Santa Fe" stop on the H line, it's located on the corner of Avenida Santa Fe and Pueyrredón in Recoleta, the city's gayborhood. The station is believed to be the first in the world named for an LGBT rights activist.
