“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” Reboot Officially in the Works

A black actress will reportedly snatch Sarah Michelle Gellar's stake.

Once more—with feeling!

A reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is actively in development, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The CW

20th Century Fox Television, which produced the original supernatural series, has hired Monica Owusu-Breen to write the script and serve as showrunner. Owusu-Breen's credits include Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Brothers & Sisters, and Charmed.

Original Buffy showrunner and creator Joss Whedon will assist Owusu-Breen on the script and return to his role of executive producer.

The reboot will notably feature a black actress in the lead role of Buffy, the feminist heroine made famous by Sarah Michelle Gellar in the iconic original series, but the actress has not yet been cast.

The CW

THR writes that the reboot "will be contemporary and build on the mythology of the original. Like today's world, the new Buffy will be richly diverse, with some aspects of the series, like the flagship, seen as metaphors for issues facing society today." Okay, but will there be a musical episode?

Fox and 20th TV chairman and CEO Gary Newman hinted earlier this year that Buffy "is probably our most ripe show for a remake. It's something we talk about frequently."

A network is not yet attached, but producers plan to pitch the reboot to streaming and cable outlets later this summer.

The CW

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, based on the 1992 film of the same name, ran for seven seasons on the CW and UPN from 1997 to 2003. The cult hit became an LGBTQ fan favorite, thanks in part to the metaphor of empowered underdogs battling evil in high school.

Buffy also featured a groundbreaking lesbian relationship between Willow (Alyson Hannigan) and Tara (Amber Benson). Out actor Tom Lenk played queer villain Andrew on Buffy and its spin-off, Angel.

Responding to buzz about a potential revival earlier this year, Lenk told NewNowNext, "I think they’d be smart to give that fandom what it wants: more stories with the same characters and actors. It doesn’t have to be everybody, though. They should just bring me back and do a spin-off."
