Burger King Bullied A Teen And A Whopper To See Which People Would Complain About First

The fast-food company's Spirit Day PSA is one of the most powerful we've ever seen.

Lots of companies went purple yesterday for Spirit Day, but Burger King did something a lot bolder: To illustrate how bullying is a problem we all need to get involved in, the fast-food giant hired young actors to pretend to bully a high school junior in one of its restaurants, in full view of other diners.

Then, a line cook demeaned some Whopper Jrs. and punched them right in the bun before sending them.

The goal was to see which would get customers to say something first. The results aren't heartening, but Burger King's efforts sure are.

"Scrawny. Short. Ugly. Fat. Weird. 30% of school kids worldwide are bullied each year," reads copy accompanying the PSA. "The Burger King brand is known for putting the crown on everyone’s head and allowing people to have it their way. Bullying is the exact opposite of that. So the Burger King brand is speaking up against bullying during National Bullying Prevention Month."

In 2014, Burger King introduced the "Proud Whopper”, a regular hamburger in a rainbow wrapper, with an inscription that read “”We are all the same inside.”

All sales of the Proud Whopper, which was available only at the Burger King on San Francisco's Market Street, were donated to the Burger King McLamore Foundation, a nonprofit giving scholarships to LGBT high schoolers and others.

The same year, the fast-food chain was a sponsor of San Francisco Pride
