Burt Reynolds Regrets His Iconic “Cosmo” Spread: “I Was Totally Zonkered”

Another moment in history ruined.

An 80-year-old Burt Reynolds attended SXSW in Austin, Texas last week, where he was promoting the new film The Bandit, which chronicles the making of his dramatic 1977 thriller Smokey And The Bandit.

Reynolds gave an interview to AOL’s What To Watch, and made a shocking revelation in the process.

The actor became the first man to pose naked for a magazine when he shot that iconic centerfold for Cosmopolitan in 1972 — you know the one, where’s he’s lying on the bear skin rug smoking a cigarette — but now, he says he mostly regrets it.

“It was really stupid. I don’t know what I was thinking. I really wish I hadn’t done that,” he said, admitting he was absolutely drunk during the whole process.

“The only rules I had… I wanted a lot of drinks before,” he said. “I have to be truthful, I was totally zonkered when I did the picture. That stupid smile, that’s what it is you know.”

“As long as it was only a certain amount of pubic hair showing, I was all for it, you know.”

The magazine went on to sell 1.5 million copies, and the picture went on to inspire countless others, including Mario Lopez, Marc Jacobs, Neil Patrick Harris and even Deadpool, to recreate it —
