How Butt Plugs Used To Be Sold As Cures For Bad Breath, Headaches

They were also touted as remedies for asthma, insomnia and constipation.

Our grandparents' generation had home remedies for everything: from gargling garlic to cure a sore throat to eating dark chocolate to curb a cough. But did grandma ever tell you about the healing properties of your butt plug?

Sold as "Dr. Young’s Ideal Rectal Dilators" in the late 1800s, butt plugs were being branded as a "miracle cure" for everything from asthma to acne.

Dr. Young even once wrote in a medical journal that the plugs would cure 75% of people suffering from insanity in just a few weeks.

The remedy caught on, with additional health benefits being added regularly, until the pesky Federal Food, Drugs and Cosmetics Act was implemented in 1938, revealing the butt plugs may not be as helpful as everyone hoped.

"The rectal dilator would be dangerous to health when used with the frequency and duration prescribed, recommended or suggested in the labeling," the court noted in its records. “The labeling of both products bore false and misleading representations regarding their efficacy in the treatment of the conditions indicated below."

And just like that, the products were ordered to be destroyed, and butt play returned to being frowned upon once more.
