Buttigieg Campaign Cancels Gay Bar Event Over Stripper Pole?

“I would think they would want to show support for their own community.”

Even a fundraising machine has his limits.

A popular Rhode Island gay club claims that Pete Buttigieg's presidential campaign abruptly canceled a fundraiser Friday night due to concerns about the venue's Hustlers vibe, WPRI 12 News reports.

Chasten Buttigieg, former first man of South Bend, Indiana, had been scheduled to headline the fundraiser at the Dark Lady in Providence.

Buck Asprinio, owner of the Dark Lady, alleges that when members of the Buttigieg campaign arrived at the venue before the event, they asked the staff to remove the "dancing pole" in the middle of the club. The club's management refused.

“We had sent pictures of the club, they knew exactly what the place looked like,” Asprinio said. “We thought the fundraiser was going forward at full force.”

"Pete Buttigieg’s husband just canceled his appearance/fundraiser tonight at the Dark Lady because the 'gay bar has a dancer pole!'" a Dark Lady rep wrote on Facebook. "We guess this is what the gay candidate does to the gay community! #downonthepoles #dancersforanyoneelse."

“It’s been here since we opened and it’s not going anywhere,” Asprinio explained. “The dancer pole is part of who we are—if you want to dance on a pole, we’re the place to be.”

According to Asprinio, the Buttigieg campaign scrapped the fundraiser about 20 minutes before it was scheduled to start, and arriving attendees were told to relocate to the nearby Hotel Providence.

He said he's disappointed the campaign moved its event to a “straight venue,” adding, “I would think they would want to show support for their own community.”

While a Buttigieg campaign spokesperson declined to give a reason for the fundraiser's relocation, she did not deny the Dark Lady’s claims. “Unfortunately we had to relocate this evening’s event,” said Tess Whittlesey, adding that the club would still be compensated as promised. “We are grateful to the enthusiastic and dedicated supporters that joined us tonight in Providence.”

The Dark Lady event had been promoted on social media by City Council President Sabina Matos. Buttigieg has also been publicly endorsed by Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza.

If Buttigieg wins the 2020 Democratic nomination, the 38-year-old candidate would become the first openly gay presidential nominee from a major political party.
