Caitlyn Jenner Reasons With Her Toughest Critics

"This is about life. This is about life and death."

Since her debut on the cover of Vanity Fair, Caitlyn Jenner has been criticized by trans advocates for her conservative values and apparent lack of knowledge about the issues non-famous trans people face both in America and around the world.

"It quickly became clear that although her gender had changed, Jenner's conservative outlook had not, nor would appear to be her binary views on gender," New York Times reporter Nicholas Krist says in a new video interview featuring the Olympic gold medalist.

As part of the interview, Caitlyn visits some of her toughest young critics from Brooklyn's trans-inclusive Academy for Young Writers.

Sitting down with Joshua and Spencer, Caitlyn acknowledged her experience as a "privileged white male" but refused to make excuses for the way she understands the trans experience.

Said Jenner:

"I will never ever make excuses for working hard all my life and being successful and raising a wonderful family and kids. Trans people can transition in private, and I have not had that luxury because of who I am. Because of that privilege I have been exposed to more than you could ever even imagine — being destroyed in the tabloids, paparazzi following me everywhere, lies about me."

"Maybe this is the reason God put me on this earth, to tell my story, to try to make a difference in the world,” she continued. “Because this story and this issue — trans, gender identity, nonconforming, whatever it may be — is bigger than what I did back in ’76 and winning the Games. It’s bigger than breaking world records and doing all that kind of stuff. This is about life. This is about life and death. People destroy their lives over what we all kind of deal with.”

By the end of their chat, Spencer, a teen who tried thoroughly reading Jenner throughout the first half of the video, finally comes around to her.

"By her using her voice and using her story to advocate, she's opening a door for people who are like me that can come out slowly or can come out over time," he said. "We don't have to wait another 45 years to come out and feel miserable for the rest of our lives, we can do it now."
