Caitlyn Jenner Vows To Fight For Trans Rights, Starts As HuffPo Columnist: "I Have A Lot Of Catching Up To Do"

Celebrity Sightings In New York City - June 30, 2015

Caitlyn Jenner is sharing the fear she faced in deciding to publicly come out as transgender—and reaffirming her commitment to fighting for LGBT equality—in a new column, "The Real Me," appearing on both CaitlynJenner.com and the Huffington Post.

In her first column, "The Journey Begins," Jenner reveals she's overwhelmed with the positive response she's received since appearing on the cover of Vanity Fair—but she admits she has "a lot of catching up to do."

Up until now, I have totally isolated myself from the transgender community, so I have a lot of catching up to do. I feel such a responsibility to this courageous group to try to get it right and tell all sides of the story. To me, that's always the biggest question: am I doing it right?

A few weeks ago, I had dinner with some of my new friends—a group of six trans women—and I went around the table and asked each of them how long it had been since their transitions. One said 20 years, another said 15 years ago... seven years ago... three years ago... They came around to me and I said, "Two weeks."

Flash-forward a few weeks and I've already learned so much about this community, [and] the issues and the people involved. It's been an eye-opening experience for me —and it's mainly made me realize how fortunate I am.

Future columns will profile Jenner's new friends, as well as "the serious issues and lessons" she has learned thus far in her public transition.

"Let's live our true selves," she advises, "and make a positive difference while doing it."

Such a fun dinner in NYC w/ this powerful group of trans women. They are all so beautiful. @GeenaRocero @candiscayne
