High School Parents Terrified Of Comprehensive Sex Ed, "Genderbread Person"

l

Parents at a northern California high school are battling the school board, enraged that their children were learning about issues like consent, contraception and gender identity in a sex education class.

A group of parents of students at Acalanes High School in Lafayette, California, said they were given an "opt out" form before class began, but weren't aware the course would be taught by instructors from Planned Parenthood, and were never shown the materials that would be distributed to their kids.

Those materials included worksheets that presented the responsibilities that come with being sexually active, and a guide to understanding consent. One sheet included a "Genderbread Person" that explained the difference between gender identity, gender expression, biological sex and sexual orientation.

“Planned Parenthood is not exactly the best when it comes to putting young people first,” said Brad Dacus, president of the right-wing, anti-gay Pacific Justice Institute. “They get more grants from the promiscuity of children. The material they have provided was material that mirrored their agenda." The group alleges that Planned Parenthood instructors also pressured kids to have  sex.

But the truth, as Think Progress reports, is:

Planned Parenthood has a long history of providing comprehensive sexual health information to teens, and it’s not uncommon for them to partner with school districts. Although conservative opponents have argued that Planned Parenthood shouldn’t be allowed to provide sex ed in public schools — suggesting there must be some kind of ulterior motive to convince kids to get pregnant and have abortions — a recent study confirmed that a sex ed curriculum developed by the group effectively helps kids delay having sex.

And according to national surveys, Planned Parenthood’s materials aren’t exactly outside the mainstream. Most Americans overwhelmingly support comprehensive sex ed.

The parents have since formed a coalition, No to Irresponsible Sex Education (or NOISE), and are threatening to sue the school district. They're also calling for Planned Parenthood to be barred from "selling" sex at the school.

To the contrary, students don't seem to care. “I never felt Planned Parenthood was promoting their own services or encouraging us to have sex,” said Acalanes student Megan Yee.
