According to Deadline, Michael Stuhlbarg, who played Elio's father in Call Me by Your Name, said that director Luca Guadagnino, and the author of the original novel, André Aciman, are serious about filming a sequel to the 2017 Oscar nominated film.

“He [Guadagnino] seems to think that we might be able to pick up the action a few years later,” Stuhlbarg said, “to see what’s happened to these characters and the choices they’ve made, and life after this particularly momentous summer for them all. But it sounds like something he’s serious about, and André Aciman is thrilled I think at the idea.”

This isn't the first time that Call Me By Your Name... Again has been teased. Earlier this year Guadagnino told The Hollywood Reporter his idea for a sequel, and how he wants Call Me By your Name to go the Before Sunrise route and have the Elio and Oliver cross paths every few years in the future.

“I think Elio [Timothee Chalamet] will be a cinephile, and I’d like him to be in a movie theater watching Paul Vecchiali’s Once More,” a 1988 film that dealt with gay love and AIDS,” said Guadagnino. “That could be the first scene [in the sequel]… [HIV] is going to be a very relevant part of the story.”

“In my opinion, Call Me can be the first chapter of the chronicles of the life of these people that we met in this movie, and if the first one is a story of coming of age and becoming a young man, maybe the next chapter will be, what is the position of the young man in the world, what does he want — and what is left a few years later of such an emotional punch that made him who he is?”

So Guadagnino is game to to pick up the story of Elio and Oliver, and Stuhlbarg is also excited about returning as Elio's father if the sequel were to happen.

“There are portions of the book that we didn’t mine as thoroughly,” Stuhlbarg said.

“I’m curious about it myself and I would be thrilled to be a part of any kind of a sequel. It was a very special experience for all of us. I think it would have to be some kind of unique thing from what it was, but I would absolutely be game for trying.”
