Can Electric Cars Make Us Drive More?

Americans are driving less and less: this year so far, we've driven the least amount of miles since 2004, according to the Federal Highway Administration.

It is assumed, of course, that high gas prices are keeping people home, though it stands to reasons that fewer people are commuting (fewer jobs to go to, natch), gas prices be damned.

So what if gas prices were a non-issue? There are some pretty sexy - or at least adorable, in the case of the Nissan Leaf - electric cars rolling out in the next few years. The BMW i series certainly isn't a budget option, but look at how shiny it is! I WANT ONE. We'll have to wait a few months to see how these cars are priced, which will be a good gauge of whether they're actual Band-Aids to the economical/environmental/oh shit run for the hills situation we have going on right now, or if they're just hopping a ride on the trend train.

Either way, though...SHINY.
