Cara Delevingne: "My Sexuality Is Not A Phase"

Model Cara Delevingne is dabbling in acting, making her leading-lady debut with the new romantic mystery Paper Towns.

But the 22-year-old British beauty wants to make clear there's one area she's not just "testing the waters" in: Being bisexual.

“My sexuality is not a phase," Delevingne tells The New York Times. "I am who I am.”

Her remarks come after a controversial profile in this month's Vogue, where writer Rob Haskell speculated that Delevingne's attraction to women—and thus her current relationship with Annie Clark, a.k.a. singer St. Vincent—was a passing fancy.

“Her parents seem to think girls are just a phase for Cara, and they may be correct,” he wrote, going on to suggest that her bisexuality was just kind of an acting out because he mother was a heroin addict.

“When I suggest to Cara that to trust a man, she might have to revise an old and stubborn idea of hers—that women are perennially troubled and therefore only women will accept her—her smile says she concedes the point.”

Haskell's "theory" perpetuates ugly stereotypes about bisexuals and contributes to bi erasure.  More than 20,000 people signed a petition calling for Vogue editrix Anna Wintour to apologize.  (Don't hold your breath, folks.)

But Delevingne says she found “nothing malicious” in Haskell's article. Honestly, she's probably got more important things to think about—like her upcoming role in Suicide Squad, and, y'know, actually being in love.

In fact, she tells the Times that her relationship with Clark helps with her acting.

“If you’re in love with someone, you can be with them like no one else is in the room. Acting is like that," she explains.

"It’s like taking that feeling and turning it on so nothing else matters when you’re looking in another actor’s face.”
