This “Carol” Superfan Is a Lesbian Shero Flung Out of Space
We stan a Carol stan!
Maggie Larkin is, like, really into Carol, Todd Haynes' Oscar-nominated 2015 film about a forbidden love affair between Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett) and Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) in 1950s New York.
Larkin recently sat down for a chat with Film Fanatics, a Netflix Film video series featuring interviews with cinematic superfans.
What else should you know about Larkin? "I think I might be gay," she tells host Ryan Hynes.
How does she know? "Probably the relationships I’ve had with women. But also my Carol superfandom is a pretty good sign."
Larkin, surrounded at home by Carol memorabilia, estimates that she's seen the film, based on Patricia Highsmith's novel The Price of Salt, about 400 times. "Every time I watch it and rewatch it," she explains, "just the sparks that they have, you can’t deny it."
"The femme representation I think is really important," she continues. "As a child, I saw a lot of butch women and that was the only representation of lesbianism."
So is Larkin more of a Carol or a Therese? "I describe myself on dating profiles as a Carol-Therese switch," she says. "And I am single."
How long does Larkin think her Carol obsession will last? "As long as it takes. For me to feel satisfied, for me to feel like I have my own Carol storyline in my life. I want that ending."
