Carrie Fisher Dead At 60

"She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly."

Carrie Fisher has died at the age of 60.

Family spokesman Simon Halls released a statement on behalf of Fisher's daughter, Billie Lourd:

"It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother, Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning. She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers."

On Friday, Fisher went into cardiac arrest about 15 minutes before landing on a flight from London to Los Angeles. Once the ground, an unresponsive Fisher was taken to UCLA Medical Center and placed on a ventilator.

There were false reports stating that her brother, Todd Fisher, said she was in stable condition. The Star Wars icon was in critical condition after being moved from the ER to the intensive care unit.

“She’s in the ICU and everybody’s praying for her,” he told Variety. “There’s nothing new from the doctors. There’s nothing new at all… There’s no good news or bad news.”

Fisher was in London on a book-signing tour for her latest memoir, The Princess Diarist and filming scenes for the upcoming season of Catastrophe.

Fisher was most famous for playing Princess Leia Organa in the Star Wars films, but she was Hollywood royalty from birth. She was the daughter of Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher, and aside from Star Wars, Fisher also appeared in films such as When Harry Met Sally..., Soapdish and dozens more over the course of her decades-long career.

Fisher was also a critically acclaimed writer. She wrote the screenplay for Postcards From the Edge, based on her book of the same name about her relationship with her mother. She authored other books including her memoir Wishful Drinking, which she turned into a one woman show that was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Special.

In her private life Fisher suffered from addiction and depression, which she spoke openly about in her writing. She dated singer Paul Simon from 1977-1983, marrying him in 1983—they divorced the following year. Fisher recently revealed in her new book that she had an on-set affair with Harrison Ford during the filming of Star Wars.

Fisher and her mother are the subject of a new documentary, Bright Lights debuting on HBO in 2017.

Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm released a statement on the passing of Fisher:

“Carrie holds such special place in the hearts of everyone at Lucasfilm it is difficult to think of a world without her. She was Princess Leia to the world but a very special friend to all of us. She had an indomitable spirit, incredible wit, and a loving heart. Carrie also defined the female hero of our age over a generation ago. Her groundbreaking role as Princess Leia served as an inspiration of power and confidence for young girls everywhere. We will miss her dearly.”
