"Love Is Strange" Stars Alfred Molina And John Lithgow Designed Bow Ties For Marriage Equality

Last year's gay indie hit Love is Strange stars John Lithgow and Alfred Molina as a New York couple facing familial and financial woes after finally achieving marital bliss.

In honor of the film's release on DVD, Lithgow and Molina—along with Love is Strange director Ira Sachs and his husband, Boris Torres—have designed nifty bow ties for Tie the Knot in collaboration with The Tie Bar, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Justin Mikita's marriage equality campaign.

For a limited time you can buy a silk bow tie designed by Lithgow, Molina, or Sachs and Torres: Lithgow, who plays an artist in Love is Strange, designed a tie that's explosion of bold colors, reminiscent of Jackson Pollack's work; Molina's is a Pop Art-style rendering of composer Frederic Chopin, whose music appears in the film.

Sachs and Torres, meanwhile, collaborated on a tie meant to evoke Julius', the iconic New York gay bar that features in the movie.

"Love is Strange is a film about the family we choose as gay people," explained Sachs. "And our bow tie honors the importance of a meeting place like Julius' to the building of community." Torres added, "For Ira and me, [Julius'] was also where we fell in love, so it seems particularly fitting as a metaphor for our relationship, and marriage."
