Cate Blanchett To Make Her Broadway Debut

The "Carol" star will appear in "The Present," an update of a rare Chekov play.

Oscar winner Cate Blanchett will make her much-anticipated Broadway debut next winter in The Present, written by her husband, playwright Andrew Upton.

Brooklyn filmmaker John Crowley will direct the drama, a new adaption of Chekov's lesser-known Platonov.

In a Russian country house in the mid-1990s, widow Anna Petrovna (Blanchett) is celebrating her birthday with the wry Platonov (Roxburgh), his wife, former students and friends.

The atmosphere seems friendly, but bubbling away underneath are 20 years worth of unfinished business and unresolved relationships.

It's a big time for Chekov: The Cherry Orchard opens on Broadway in the fall, while Michael Mayer's film version of The Seagull, with Anette Bening, is in post-production.

Platonov was not discovered until 16 years after Chekhov's death, and has been performed under various titles—Wild Honey, Fatherlessness and The Disinherited.

The Present premiered in Sydney last August as a production of the Sydney Theatre Company, of which Blanchett and Upton serve are co-artistic directors.

It's expected to have a limited run during the 2016-17 season but no set dates or venue have been announced.

Blanchett has never performed on Broadway before, though she has earned acclaim in New York productions of A Street Car Named Desire, Uncle Vanya, Hedda Gabler and The Maids.

She received her seventh Oscar nomination this year for Carol.
