CBS Pulls "Doubt" After Just Two Episodes
CBS has pulled Doubt, the legal drama starring Katherine Heigl and Laverne Cox, after airing only two episodes. A rerun of Bull will air next Wednesday in the show's stead, followed by Criminal Minds: Beyond Border on March 8.
The network has declined to call the move an outright cancelation, claiming it may return at a later date.
The show, the first network series to present a trans actor in an featured role, was initially developed for the 2014 television season but was retooled with Heigl as lead. It slumped through its debut with 5.29 million viewers and a 0.8 Live+same day rating among adults 18-49, the lowest for one of its dramas in that age bracket.
Ratings dropped a quarter by the second episode, with 4 million viewers same-day viewers.
Doubt's married co-creators, Tony Phelan and Joan Rater, told The Advocate they were moved to include Cox's character to make the world a better place for transgender kids, like their son, Tom.
"The fact that those kids can watch a show on CBS and see somebody who they haven’t seen before—I think that’s huge," said Phelan. "I don’t discount that at all."
He added that audiences become attached to characters, which can help break barriers: "You spend time with them every week. You see them go through their trials and tribulations. So I think that any kind of diversity, but especially diversity about gender identity and sexual orientation, on television, especially network television, is incredibly important."
