Another Gay Dating App Shutters, Love Is a Little More Dead

RIP, Chappy.

Chappy users, we've got some bad news for you.

The team behind the gay dating app announced late last week that it is shutting down, effective February 28, 2020.

According the app's FAQ page, it will be folded into Bumble—a popular dating app that is women-focused and not LGBTQ-specific, and has invested in Chappy's future since its launch 2017.

"We’re joining Bumble because we have the opportunity to take what we’ve built together here to the next level by creating a space for healthy and safe connections across the LGBTQ+ spectrum," Chappy's FAQ page reads. "Bumble is committed to fighting all kinds of inequality, and we’re excited to land our spaceship safely in the Bumble Hive."

The mobile app, billed as "the space for gay connections," was reportedly popular among gay men in the U.K. and the U.S., offering its users three different types of matches: casual, commitment, or exploring.

It appears Chappy's team did see the writing on the wall, though: Last year, the company moved its headquarters from the U.K. to Austin, Texas, where Bumble is based.

As of August 2019, Chappy had some 610,000 registered users to Bumble's 65 million, reps for the app told the Austin-American Statesman. Of course, that discrepancy can be explained at least somewhat by Bumble's broader appeal—although Grindr, one of the world's most popular gay dating apps, boasts some 3.6 million daily users.

As of this Monday, February 17, Chappy users are no longer able to swipe on new matches. Any previously made matches won't transfer over to Bumble, either, although Chappy is giving its loyal users a weeklong free trial of Bumble's premium mode as a consolation prize.

Those hoping to stay in touch with their connections should exchange cell numbers or Instagram deets ASAP. Or not. We're not here to judge.
