Check Out The New Trailer For The Documentary About The Gayest Horror Movie Of All Time

"Scream, Queen!" digs into the queer not-quite-subtext of "Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge."

A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge is the gayest horror movie of all time. So gay, in fact, that it’s hard to believe its producers when they say they didn't see it at the time.

Gay screenwriter David Chaskin infused the film with more queerness than an entire season of Teen Wolf: We’re talking naked teen horseplay, shower-room whippings, and angsty adolescent Jesse (gay actor Mark Patton) screaming about how “something is trying to get inside my body!”

At one point Jesse even confronts his sadistic gym teacher in S&M leather bar.

In another scene, he lip syncs to "Touch Me (All Night Long) in his bedroom, backing his booty up to his dresser to close the drawer.

In 2016, Patton told Buzzfeed the film was going to be even gayer: “[Robert Englund] asked if he could put the blade inside my mouth.”

Patton demurred, though, so in the movie Freddie just glides over Jesse's lips. "If it would have gone in and out, it would have been really not a good thing.”

The film's subtext (really, just text) is explored at length in the new documentary Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street, which also examines Patton's struggle as a young gay actor at the height of the AIDS epidemic.

“I wake up in the middle of the first movie that I’m the lead actor in, and realize there’s a gay subtext in it," he says in the trailer below. "In 1985, Hollywood was very homophobic and very AIDS-phobic. If you were gay, you were hiding.”

Directors Roman Chimienti and Tyler Jensen interviewed Patton, cast and crew, film historians and fans, to examine how the film is appreciated now in a way that it couldn't have been 30 years ago. As film studies professor Andrew Scahill puts it, "If he lets himself to sleep—out comes the queer monster!"

Scream Queen!

Scream Queen! has been in development for some time, but Jensen and Chimienti wanted to do it justice, and have updated it with references to current events and life changes. “We could have easily slapped together a fan film with a message," Jensen told Dread Central, "but that would be doing a disservice to the integrity of Mark’s story and all of the people that it includes.”

Almost in its final incarnation, the film has already had a test screening. Check out the new trailer below and keep checking the Scream Queen! Facebook page for information on its release.
