Gay Men's Health Crisis, the world's first and leading HIV/AIDS service organization, held its 35th Anniversary Spring Gala Thursday evening at New York City’s Highline Stages.

Former President Bill Clinton, founder of the Clinton Foundation, was honored at the gala with the Judith Peabody Humanitarian Award.

“The Clinton Foundation has been battling the epidemic since 2002, saving the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide,” said GMHC CEO Kelsey Louie in a previous statement.

Although the former president was unable to attend, Chelsea Clinton accepted the award on her father's behalf. “I hope that all of you here tonight recognize that, while it is the 35 anniversary, the work is not done,” she said in her speech. “And the work will need all of you to continue to support it, because we must continue, we must not lose ground, and we must show our children what our values really are.”

The evening's other honorees were longtime HIV/AIDS activist Peter Staley and his brother, Barclays CEO Jes Staley, for leading an organization with a strong track record in supporting LGBT rights.

Attendees at the 2017 gala, which featured a special performance by Tony winner Billy Porter, included Edie Windsor, Phil Donahue, Marlo Thomas, and GMHC co-founder Larry Kramer, plus Fun Home stars Michael Cerveris, Roberta Colindrez, and Beth Malone.

Proceeds from the gala will benefit GMHC's continued services for those living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.
