Chelsea Manning Released From Jail

The order comes a day after Manning attempted suicide.

Whistleblowing former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning has been ordered released from jail, a day after she attempted suicide, according to multiple media reports.

On Thursday, federal judge Anthony Trenga said that Manning’s detention served no purpose. She has been held since last May for refusing to testify in a grand jury investigation into WikiLeaks.

“The court finds Ms. Manning’s appearance before the grand jury is no longer needed, in light of which her detention no longer serves any coercive purpose,” he wrote.

He declined, however, to waive $256,000 in fines that Manning faces for refusing to testify; by Friday morning, a GoFundMe campaign to raise those funds had already hit $64,000.

Earlier this week, Manning’s attorney’s announced that she had attempted suicide and was recovering at a hospital in Alexandria, Virginia.

It was the second time in one year that Manning, a trans woman, had been jailed for refusing to testify.

Manning served seven years of a 35 year sentence in prison for leaking classified U.S. intelligence information via WikiLeaks before her sentence was commuted by then-President Barack Obama.

Her incarceration has been widely denounced by LGBTQ activists and allies.
