Last week Cher jetted over to London to accept the Legend award at British gay mag Attitude’s 2013 Attitude Awards. Addressing why gays have stood by her so long, the Dark Lady admitted we like a bit of drama:
“Gay men especially … either love you or they don’t even notice that you’re on the planet,” she teased the audience. “I think what you guys like, is you like a strong woman that’s having a breakdown constantly, and that certainly is me. Judy Garland’s got nothing on me.”
The Grammy-winning diva remembered her earliest exposure to gay men, at the tender age of 9:
My mother had these two friends who came over—they were hairdressers of course—who came chacha-ing into our front door. In the beginning I thought gay was code for fun… I said to my mom, why are these guys so much more fun than the rest of your friends?”
We just are, Cher. We just are.
