Cher really does love the gays. In fact, she loves the gays so much that she turned down one of the biggest gigs a performer could ever hope for — opening the Olympic ceremony.

In an interview with Canadian mag Maclean’s Cher revealed she could’ve gone to Sochi, but was not having none of that, saying:

I can’t name names. But my friend called who is a big oligarch over there, and asked me if I’d like to be an ambassador for the Olympics and open the show. I immediately said no. I want to know why all of this gay hate just exploded over there. He said the Russian people don’t feel the way the government does.

And that is why Cher will always be our favorite.

This all also raises a very, very interesting question — will Sochi be able to secure any major international acts for their opening and closing ceremonies?
