Gay Man Has Face Slashed With Broken Glass In Brutal Bashing In Chile

"The blood was pouring from my face," said victim Patricio Díaz Bravo.

A gay man received 15 stitches to his face after a violent gay-bashing in Chile.

Cartoonist Patricio Díaz Bravo was in a bar in Puerto Natales when he was attacked by a woman yelling homophobic slurs at him. She then rushed him with a piece of broken glass and slashed his face and body, causing serious cuts.

“I ran out," Díaz Bravo told the LGBT organization Movilh. “I wasn’t able to do much else because the blood was pouring from my face and I had to find a way to fix what happened."

It's unclear what prompted the woman, identified as Yerka Torres Ojeda, but Movilh reports it wasn't the first time she had hurled slurs at Díaz Bravo. The group has called for her to get the “maximum sentence possible," adding “We hope justice is served."

Brutal attacks on LGBT people in Chile have often been connected to fascists: In 2012, 24-year-old Daniel Zamudio was beaten to death and had swastikas carved into his body. The crime sparked national outrage and leading to the introduction of hate-crime laws that included sexual orientation and gender identity. In January of this year, Jewish gay activist Jorge Arce was attacked by neo-Nazis in Santiago who punched him in the neck and slashed his arms and legs with a razor more than 40 times.

Ironically, the same weekend as the assault against Díaz Bravo, Chilean president Michelle Bachelet sent a same-sex marriage bill to congress. Marriage equality, she said, is “not only a demand of the international justice system but a legitimate demand of Chilean society."
