LGBT Event In China's "Gay Capital" Forced To Cancel

"We shall see each other someday."

A planned LGBT conference in China was forced to cancel this week, despite the event taking place in the country's "gay capital."

Speak Out scheduled the conference in the queer-friendly city of Chengdu to expand awareness of LGBT issues, including the fight to end conversion therapy, but the venue canceled the reservation due to conflicting events on the booking date.

According to Reuters, this is the second time this summer that a public LGBT seminar has been canceled. Although homosexuality is no longer illegal in China, activists report that intense conservative views regarding gay people in many parts of the country have led to occasional government interference.

Despite that known opposition to LGBT rights, many young people were still surprised by the event being canned, as Chengdu is known as "gaydu," or "the city of the gays," because of its liberal stance on homosexuality.

Speak Out's founder told Reuters that Chengdu's security bureau has since been in touch with the group to ask when they plan to try to hold their next event and what they'd be planning to discuss.
