Chris Christie: NBA "Grandstanding" By Moving All-Star Game Out Of NC

The governor's comments have drawn criticism from the New Jersey advocacy group Garden State Equality.

The NBA took a stand for equality by deciding to pull next year's All-Star game out of North Carolina due to the state's anti-LGBT HB2, but New Jersey Governor Chris Christie thinks it was an unnecessary move.

“It’s grandstanding by the NBA. That’s what they do,” Christie said during his stint as the guest host of the Boomer & Carton Show on sports radio WFAN.

The governor wondered if the NBA's decision to protest North Carolina's bathroom bill will lead to them attempting "to evaluate the laws in every state.”

But now, New Jersey advocacy group Garden State Equality is speaking out against the politician's opinion.

Group leader Christian Fuscarino sent out an email to members saying, "We deserve a better governor. Instead of bashing the NBA, he should be welcoming them to the Prudential Center in Newark."

"As New Jersey's largest LGBT organization, we thank the NBA for standing against discrimination and promoting an environment in sports where all players feel welcome," Fuscarino wrote in the email. "Governor Christie continues to stand on the wrong side of history when it comes to LGBT issues, but especially those affecting the transgender community."

Meanwhile, the 2017 All-Star game that was planned to take place in Charlotte is now rumored to be headed to New Orleans instead.
