Chris Kelly Of '90s Hip-Hop Duo Kris Kross Dead At 34

Chris "Mac Daddy" Kelly, best known as half of the 1990s hip-hop duo Kris Kross, died in an Atlanta hospital on Wednesday, after being found unconscious in his home. He was 34.

With partner Chris "Daddy Mack" Smith, Kelly (above left) hit Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Jump" in 1992, when the two were just 13. Aided by the success of their follow-up single, "Warm It Up," Kriss Kross' debut album, Totally Krossed Out, went multiplatinum.

As the two grew out of puberty, though, their more adult image didn't resonate with fans, and subsequent albums failed to make a strong impression. (The final album Kris Kross release was 1996's Young, Rich and Dangerous.)

Known for wearing their clothes backwards, the duo reunited in February at a party for producer Jermaine Dupri's So So Def label. "Rest in peace to my lil bro Chris Kelly of Kris Kross," tweeted label mate and friend Da Brat. "Damn, wasn't we JUST at rehearsal and doin a So So Def20 show?"

The cause of Kelly's death hasn't been confirmed, though the medical examiner's office says it plans to conduct an autopsy on Thursday.
