Chris Kluwe Faces Competition, Obama Brings More Laughs Than Conan At Nerd Prom

Plus Agent Coulson’s resurrection, Bill Clinton introduces Bridegroom, and who is Jackie “Moms” Mabley?

Helen Mirren was named Best Actress at the Olivier Awards Helen Mirrenon London for her play The Curious Incident of the Dog In the Night, which took home seven prizes in total.

Bill Clinton introduced Bridegroom, the documentary based on the viral video It Could Happen To You at the Tribeca Film Festival this weekend, saying ” “This is really — on one level — a wonderful, sad, heartbreaking yet exhilarating and life affirming story, and on another level it’s a story about our nation’s struggle to make one more step in forming a more perfect union, for which marriage is both the symbol and substance.” The film picked up the audience’s award for nonfiction documentary.

The MMO EVE is set to become a television series telling “a future history of rival societies trapped beyond a wormhole in a dystopian sci-fi world.”

Pain & GainPain & Gain picked up the top spot at the box office this weekend with $20 million, displacing Oblivion which took in $17 million.

Which should remind us all, that regardless of what critics think, people go to Michael Bay movies. The director has only had one flop, The Island, in his entire career. He’s also keeping the pyrotechnics industry afloat when Roland Emmerich isn’t making as many movies.

But still the big box office news was overseas, where Iron Man 3 took in an astonishing $195.3 million. For comparison, the opening weekend for The Avengers only took in $185 million, so the film should blow out the box office when it opens this weekend in the U.S.Chris Kluwe

Chris Kluwe is facing some competition on the field since the Minnesota Vikings drafted UCLA punter Jeff Locke in the NFL draft last week. And Kluwe thinks his activism might have something to do with it. “It’s a shame that in a league with players given multiple second chances after arrests, including felony arrests, that speaking out on human rights has a chance of getting you cut.” Fellow activist Brendon Ayanbedejo was released from the Baltimore Ravens last month.

Jackie "Moms" MableyWhoopi Goldberg recently announced plans for a movie about lesbian comic Jackie “Moms” Mabley, but who exactly was this trailblazer?

A group in the UK thinks that schools should include age-appropriate education about pornography in their sex education courses. It makes sense, as accessible as porn has become. Some of it is just common sense, like teaching 11-yearolds the danger of sexting, and at age 14, adding that porn is acting, and not real, with unrealistic bodies and sex acts. I can imagine the screams if this common sense was suggested on this side of the pond.

Senator Joe Manchin, one of three Democratic Senators who has not declared support for same-sex marriage, is at least admitting that voting against the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell was a mistake.Happy Endings

The ratings for Happy Endings have dropped again, garnering about 2 million viewers on Friday. It’s a foregone conclusion that ABC will cancel the show, but with numbers like these, will USA Network save it?

The Swedish National Encyclopedia has decided to add a gender neutral pronoun to its catalog, recognizing a word that has been around in common speech since at least the 1960s. The word is useful in dealing with unknown genders or person not identifying with either gender. Attempts have been made to introduce a gender-neutral pronoun into English, but with no success.

Agent CoulsonWe now believe we know how Agent Coulson will be alive for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. should ABC pick it up to series, and it sounds like awfully shaky writing for something from Joss Whedon.

The American Unity PAC, formed by billionaire Paul Singer to lobby and recruit Republicans to the marriage equality cause has spent $500,000 in the last month, with concentrated efforts in Rhode Island, Delaware, Indiana, West Virginia and Utah. That’s on top of $250,000 spent in Minnesota, where marriage equality is working its way through the legislature.

The White House Correspondents Dinner was Saturday night, bringing together stars, politicians and journalists. Each year, the Nerd Prom is generally a laugh riot to watch, but this year it seemed a bit subdued. One highlight was the House of Cards spoof that played before President Obama and Conan O’Brien went on, with many Senators taking on Kevin Spacey in the quest for tickets to the event.

Conan O’Brien is generally funny, but most people agree that he was chosen to host after a few years of comedians that many felt went too far, including Wanda Sykes. Conan did hit the mark on not being too cutting, but that seemed to make his whole routine fall flat. One funny bit near the end about Rachel Maddow and Anderson Cooper did bring the house down.

Of course, the draw to the dinner is always the President, and Obama didn’t disappoint, from the moment he chose to take the stage to rap music instead of just Hail To the Chief to making fun of CNN, and even hitting the Jay-Z/Beyonce Cuba controversy.

One part of the President’s speech that is worth excerpting is Steven Spielberg’s next project, Obama, which pokes fun at the alleged mystery about the president, and stars the only Hollywood actor capable of portraying any character, Daniel Day-Lewis. The casting for Vice President Biden may have taken the cake though.

Let’s be honest: dating has to be rough for a supervillain, and speed dating has to be the worst. How do you manage to make an impression without sounding like the psychopath that you probably are? And can you really sound like husband material when your life goal isn’t a home and kids, but taking over the world?

Out NFL hopeful Alan Gendreau wasn’t part of the NFL Draft last week, but is training in hopes of being invited to try out at camp this summer. He talks to ABC about his college experience and his hopes for being the first out player in the big leagues.

Cadaver is a remarkably dark and charming film about a dead man who wakes up from the table with the driving desire to see his wife one last time, but even with some help, things don’t go just as he’d hoped.

Watching owls fly is generally remarkable to start with. There’s something incredibly majestic about them, and I’ve been stunned more than once when one dipped into my headlights. A trained owl is still a natural hunter, so after associating a tone with feeding, these guys set out to get slow-motion video of a barn owl attacking its prey. Aerodynamics don’t seem to be a major concern for the owl, and it’s very worth watching the whole thing, as the second angle is truly amazing.

Last week Bishop Gene Robinson went on The Colbert Report to talk about his new book, and told super-Catholic Colbert that the Church had probably gotten a few things wrong about gay people, but that he had hope that with a better understanding of God, things might change.

Opinionated. You'll love to hate me
