"Eating Out" Star Chris Salvatore Forms A Loving Bond With His 89-Year-Old Neighbor

"She has been there for me so much... I feel that it is my duty to be able to give her this gift."

As gay people, we have a legacy of creating our families from choice, not just biology. For actor Chris Salvatore, that meant looking no further than right next door.

Salvatore, best known for the Eating Out movies, has bonded with his 89-year-old neighbor Norma Cook in a truly inspiring way: The two have been friends and neighbors for years but last year, after doctors told Cook she needed round-the-clock care, he stepped up to be her primary caregiver.

“I love her, she’s my best friend. I would do anything for her,” the 31-year-old actor-singer told People. “I believe that human kindness is a magical thing and can heal what doctors can’t.”

Norma has been diagnosed with leukemia and only has a few months to live, but Chris was determined to make sure they're as fulfilling as possible.

“She has opted out of doing treatment for the cancer,” he explains. “So now it’s my job to make her feel comfortable and at peace and not lonely. I’m giving her a gift of passing on and being at peace and having a good time in her last few months.”

Chris is Norma's power of attorney and drives her to the doctor and other appointments—he even took her to vote in November. To help with Cook's at-home expenses that not cover by Medicaid, he launched a GoFundMe campaign that's reached $57,000 of its $60,000 goal.

"Norma's last wish is to be at home with her cat Hermes as she transitions into the next life," Chris wrote on the GoFundMe page. "She has been there for me so much these last past years just as much as I have been there for her and I feel that it is my duty to be able to give her this gift."

When he moved into the West Hollywood apartment building the two share four years ago, Cook, a former interior decorator, was his across-the-hall neighbor.

“One day I said, ‘Can I come in and chat?’ Because she just seemed so sweet,” recalls Salvatore, who was going through a breakup at the time. “She offered me a glass of champagne, and it was like this immediate friendship. Just knowing she was there and listening to me made me feel better—she was able to help me through some dark times.”

On Friday he shared that, to prevent her from having to be moved into a county facility, Norma moved into his apartment. "She is my adopted grandmother, after all, and I am her grandson she never had."

Ageism is certainly an issue in the gay community, but Chris and Norma are an example of how little age really matters. As a designer in L.A., Cook had plenty of gay friends, though she lost many during the AIDS epidemic.

“It’s funny because you think you don’t have stuff in common with someone who is 89,” adds Salvatore. “But age doesn’t matter, it’s not something to hold you back from connecting to someone. You never know who could become your dearest friend."
