Chuck Lorre On "Two And A Half Men" Gay Marriage: "They're Going To Be Cheating Spouses"

It was revealed last week that Two and a Half Men's main characters, Alan (John Cryer) and Walden (Ashton Kutcher), will get married to each other so Walden can adopt a child. And at a  recent party for the TCA summer tour, the cast and creators weighed in.

Star John Cryer admits he wasn't quite sure to make of the storyline when he was told about it.  "The first time I heard it I said, WHAT?! And then I thought, ‘Oh yeah it kind of makes sense," he tells E! News. "Two heterosexual guys who are getting married because they want to have a kid together. Okay, why not? I can't imagine that kind of thing won't be happening in real life at some point."

But in California, where single-parent adoption is perfectly legal?

chuck lorre 2TAAHM creator Chuck Lorre (right) doesn't just think the marriage makes for good TV, but is also a positive political statement. "It's timely and it has a heartbeat—Ashton's character because it's Ashton, and Ashton is a man with a huge heart. He's really engaged in social welfare. He puts a lot of time and money into getting better. And we're getting the spirit of that into the show. This seems like the next logicial step. Not romance, not sex, raising a child."

Actually, it kinda seems like the folks who have devoted their lives to equality might be a little perturbed by "straight dudes getting married" jokes right out of I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry.

"I hope there's no [backlash]," says Lorre. "There's no intention to insult or diminish anyone. The intention is to create laughter. That's it. And if it's got a heartbeat in there that would be nice, too."

Of course Alan and Walden won't consummate their marriage—in fact producers still plan on having them chase girls half their age. "As soon as the child is part of this household, then their lives go on... they're going to be cheating spouses," says Lorre. "There will be more sex and more sex jokes. There's no effort here... to reach for any dignity."

Wow, we can see them inscribing the GLAAD Media Award right now.
