"Cisgender," "Hot Mess," And "Twerk" Added To Oxford English Dictionary

The latest update to the Oxford English Dictionary included the addition of the word "cisgender."

The prefix "cis-" means "on this side of," and the OED defines cisgender as "designating a person whose sense of personal identity corresponds to the sex and gender assigned to him or her at birth."

Bernard Reed is a trustee of the Gender Identity Research and Education Society, and spoke out about the importance of cisgender people when it comes to transgender rights.

“Gender non-conforming people need cisgender allies," says Reed. "Some cisgender people have for many years been staunch advocates of the rights of gender non-conforming individuals and it is heartening to see that many, many more are now respecting their identities and entitlements to equal treatment.”

The other words that were included in this year's update were "Hot Mess," "Jeggings," "Twerk," "Webisode," "Presidentiable," and "Half-Ass."
