"Clarence" Brings Gays To Cartoon Network's Regular Lineup

We've had gay representation in primetime cartoons for years, from The Simpsons to American Dad, but cartoons primarily aimed at kids are decidedly straight. However. Cartoon Network dipped a toe into the gay waters this week on an episode of kids' cartoon Clarence.

The setup: A woman waiting in a restaurant for a blind date sees a handsome man come in and she gets excited. But he looks away to find his actual date, another man. They share a couple of kisses on the cheek before taking their seats.

It's a minor bit but we, sadly, do not exist in the children's cartoon world, despite kids with two mommies or two daddies watching these shows. So it's groundbreaking in it's own way.

Here's how I see it: No, it's not really representation (although GLAAD will certainly be able to count this as representation on their television survey next year they way I understand their methodology). Butif the networks get more encouragement than screams from the One Million Moms types, there will be more of this. So let's be supportive, not critical. Let Cartoon Network and the creators know that we appreciate them dipping their toes into the water of the real world, where two men go on romantic dinner dates.

Because that's how we get actual canon gay leads in cartoons, by showing a positive reception for them.
