A college professor is under fire for giving students a quiz asking them to label images of women as "Female or Shemale."

Students at SUNY Geneseo allege that professor David Sorbello presented the "test" in an intro Sociology class on Wednesday and asked them to determine whether the women were cisgender or transgender.

One student, Jillian Sternberg, told Buzzfeed News she approached Sorbello after class to discuss the quiz, and he told her the quiz was "partly for humor and partly to discuss sexual dimorphism."

But Sternberg maintains there was no discussion of sexual dimorphism, the difference in traits between male and females in a given species. She does, however, recall Sorbello telling students, "be careful not to get too drunk or you’ll take the wrong one home."

After the incident made headlines, Sorbello banned the use of electronics in his class, which students claim is in direct response to his quiz being photographed.

Clara Gallagher, a sophomore at the school, tells NewNowNext that news of incident spread quickly.

"I've seen my [classmates and professors] trying to react to the incident," she says. "But there has also been a great sadness—students who struggle with their identity are deeply hurt, and a friend has told me they feel 'disrespected' by the college."

She believes the university is handling the incident poorly: "The community received an extremely vague email from the president that was in no way comforting to the community," she says. "And that was it. There's only been radio silence from the administration since."

Meanwhile, SUNY Geneseo president Denise A. Battles says the university is investigating.

"We are taking the matter very seriously and are gathering the facts to determine if and what action is warranted," Battles wrote in a statement. "The classroom is an environment in which students and faculty can and should discuss challenging topics and ideas, which makes it all the more important that we gather and fully review the facts in this case."

In the meantime, students and LGBT advocates are circulating a petition calling for the "immediate dismissal" of Sorbello.
